Alvaro Mora: Not Just Working for Kicks

Alvaro Mora’s story is one of resilience, determination, and triumph. Originally from Mexico, Alvaro moved to the United States at 15, navigating a new country, language, and culture while living with a visual impairment. Despite earning a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a certification as a medical interpreter, Alvaro faced significant challenges finding employment. For six years, he searched for an opportunity to apply his skills, only to encounter barriers that seemed insurmountable. That changed when he attended a job fair and discovered Peckham, Inc., an organization dedicated to providing employment opportunities and vocational training for people with disabilities.

At the job fair, Alvaro met Janet, a Peckham representative, who recognized his potential. Encouraged to apply, Alvaro secured a position on Peckham’s bilingual applicant line, marking his first-ever job. “It is a blessing for me to be able to find Peckham and be here,” Alvaro shares, his gratitude evident. His role leverages his fluency in Spanish, handling calls from Spanish-speaking customers while also assisting with English calls when needed. Alvaro’s love for language shines through as he navigates diverse dialects and expressions, connecting with callers from various backgrounds. His cultural knowledge and linguistic skills make him an asset, guiding customers with clarity and care.

Peckham’s commitment to its employees has been transformative for Alvaro. The organization provides assistive technologies, including JAWS (Job Access With Speech) and a Braille display, enabling him to work efficiently. “They worry about their employees,” Alvaro says, praising Peckham’s supportive environment and the tools that empower him to thrive. This inclusive workplace has allowed him to maintain his independence, a value he holds dear. “I don’t like people helping me with things I know I can do,” he explains, highlighting how Peckham’s resources have enabled him to manage his life and career on his terms.

Beyond the workplace, Peckham supports Alvaro’s passion for sports. A member of the U.S. National Blind Soccer Team since late 2022, Alvaro recently competed in his first international tournament. Though the team faced tough losses, Alvaro remains optimistic, inspired by a phrase he read: “Every expert was once a beginner.” Peckham’s flexibility allows him to attend training camps, balancing his athletic pursuits with his professional responsibilities. This support fosters his mental well-being, as he pursues a sport he loves while contributing to a growing community of visually impaired athletes.

Alvaro’s journey with Peckham exemplifies how opportunity and support can transform lives. From overcoming employment barriers to excelling in his career and pursuing his passion for soccer, Alvaro’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of an inclusive workplace. He hopes to see more visually impaired individuals join Peckham, a company that truly cares for its employees, helping them achieve their fullest potential.
